Elon Musk’s X faces steep daily fines in Brazil for allegedly evading a ban on the service there, according to a statement from the country’s supreme court on Thursday.

Brazil’s Supreme Court has escalated its conflict with Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) and Starlink by imposing daily fines of about $920,000 for not following a ban on the social media platform in the country.

In an abrupt reversal, the social network’s lawyers said it was complying with court orders that it had previously defied. Brazil’s Supreme Court could allow the site to return next week.

A Brazilian Supreme Court justice seized about $3 million in frozen funds of social media platform X and satellite-based internet service provider Starlink, both companies controlled by billionaire Elon Musk.

Brazil collects its fine from Starlink and X and unfreezes the companies' assets it had seized, including bank accounts and real estate.

Approximately 7.28 million reais, which equals $1.3 million, were transferred from X, while 11.07 million reais, the equivalent of $1.99 million, were transferred from Starlink.
